Background of the Study

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with dietary habits playing a significant role in their development. In Kaduna State, as in many other regions of Nigeria, the prevalence of CVD is rising, with poor dietary habits contributing to the increased risk. Diets high in saturated fats, salt, and sugar are associated with an increased risk of hypertension, obesity, and high cholesterol, all of which are risk factors for CVD. Conversely, diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins have been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. This study will investigate the relationship between dietary habits and the prevalence of CVD in Kaduna State, focusing on dietary patterns, socio-economic factors, and public health interventions aimed at reducing CVD risk.

Statement of the Problem

In Kaduna State, poor dietary habits, such as high consumption of processed foods and low intake of nutritious foods, are contributing to the increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases. Despite growing awareness of the importance of healthy eating, many individuals continue to consume diets that predispose them to hypertension, obesity, and other CVD-related conditions. This study will examine how dietary patterns influence CVD prevalence in Kaduna State, with a focus on identifying dietary changes that could reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the dietary habits of individuals in Kaduna State and their association with cardiovascular disease risk factors.
  2. To evaluate the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in relation to dietary patterns in Kaduna State.
  3. To recommend dietary interventions aimed at reducing the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in Kaduna State.

Research Questions

  1. How do dietary habits contribute to the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in Kaduna State?
  2. What are the most common dietary patterns among individuals at risk of cardiovascular diseases in Kaduna State?
  3. How can dietary interventions be implemented to reduce the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Poor dietary habits, characterized by high intake of saturated fats, salt, and sugar, are significantly associated with the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in Kaduna State.
  2. Individuals with a high intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains have a lower prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in Kaduna State.
  3. Dietary interventions aimed at promoting healthier eating habits will reduce the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in Kaduna State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on adults in both urban and rural areas of Kaduna State, examining dietary habits and their relationship with CVD risk factors. Limitations include challenges in accurately assessing dietary intake and the difficulty in establishing causality between diet and cardiovascular disease due to other confounding factors.

Definitions of Terms

  • Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD): A group of diseases that affect the heart and blood vessels, including coronary artery disease, heart attacks, and strokes.
  • Dietary Habits: The typical patterns of food consumption, including the types of foods consumed and their frequency.
  • Risk Factors: Characteristics or behaviors that increase the likelihood of developing a disease, such as obesity, high blood pressure, and poor diet.
